Rowan O’Bryan

I am an undergraduate fine arts student at UCLA. My art is centered around my identity being a disabled individual. I started using my chronic illness as a focal point in my art-making when I began to become more confident in who I was and realized that my disease isn’t something to be ashamed of. Having a disability shapes almost every aspect of how I move through life. Before I went off to college I often hid the details of disease from my friends as best I could in an effort to be seen as “normal”. At the time that I was transitioning into higher education, my disease progressed from being completely invisible to quite obvious. With the visibility of my disease and new found maturity from being around so many other college students who are very open about what makes them different, I decided to start using art as a way to express my originality. I like putting my medical supplies/devices in an art context because it is very therapeutic; it shows people that they can be seen as aesthetic and creative.
